Many of us know (or should know) the ABC’s of CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre for our family and friends. Yet, not much attention is given to teaching individuals emergency aid for our pets. These courses are available locally in most larger cities.
First and most importantly, it is important to determine if your pet is actually in immediate peril, or if they are simply having difficulty breathing, or are sick and lethargic from a virus, etc. Pet owners may confuse their pet’s other ailments for those requiring emergency aid, like choking or unconsciousness. These may well require the Heimlich manoeuvre/or CPR. Distinguishing between the two is important, as unnecessary CPR or Heimlich can actually do more harm than good.
Once emergency aid has been established as required, call emergency assistance. Now, of course, not all cities provide emergency assistance for pets. In fact, it is not as common as it should be. So if you do not have emergency assistance nearby, have someone with you to assist you with your CPR or Heimlich manoeuvre – call a friend or neighbour; If no one is nearby, don’t panic – you CAN do this if you’ve practised these techniques. If you have not practised these techniques, call an emergency animal hospital (if after hours) or your veterinarian immediately.
