Jake is a gentle senior boy who joined TEAM as a surrender to a rural animal shelter. Jake came to us with a few big ugly bumps and lumps as well as weak back legs. Luckily, the lumps are benign and his weak back legs are the result of being confined to a very small area. Although waiting on a veterinary assessment regarding potential surgery and a little TLC, old Jake is feeling like a young pup again. He is a little underweight but still weighs in at a whopping 105 lbs. In the coming months, our old pal Jake will need 3-4 short (10-15 minute) walks a day and a healthy bountiful diet to continue regaining muscle strength.

Jake needs to live in a home with zero or very few stairs. He would do well in an apartment or condo with an elevator as he is relaxed in the home, barks minimally, and is polite in elevators and hallways. He is a low energy dog and enjoys short walks, games of tug-of-war, and playing with his toys. Jake is house trained and will let you know with a charming little bark and nudge that he either wants to go outside, is hungry, or needs more water. He will also let you know when it’s time to play. Jake is happy to be left alone in the home uncrated for up to 6 hours but he will definitely have some energy to play off when his friends return.

He currently lives with a very precocious cat and they do very well together, he has little to no prey drive. He is not kid tested but his wonderful temperament leads us to believe he would be good with kind, respectful children.

Jake is a very sweet and gentle boy who loves affection but also respects people’s personal space. Because of his size and breed, Jake needs rules so he does not get possessive or bossy. Jake’s new friends should read up on maintaining a healthy relationship with power breeds. Because Jake is new to the city and spent his life working hard to guard his home, he likes to bark and pull at dogs on the street. Jake’s new friends will need to be physically strong to walk him effectively until he learns better social skills. After a recent consult with a trainer, he is doing very well in adapting to other dogs and improving slowly.
